A population of about 1 million people in Inhambane Province speak the language of Xitswa, a Bantu language. In 1925 J.A. Persson, a Swiss missionary, compiled an English-Xitswa dictionary.

Recognizing the need for an updated dictionary, as well as one that would be Xitswa-English, Jennie Hall started a project to create a new dictionary in 2014. The dictionary will be completed in 2022 and available for free.
